How is it relevant to your business?
After completing this one-day First Aid at Work course, the participant will be competent to be the workplace ‘Appointed Person’. They will be able to manage any medical first aid emergencies that might occur within the workplace. Successful participants acquire the knowledge and skills to provide first response assistance to persons having suffered an accident or injury at work.
The Health & Safety Executive requires that the minimum required first-aid provision on any work site is a suitably stocked first-aid box and an Appointed Person to take charge of first-aid arrangements. Read more
Benefits to your business
In addition to reducing potential injury costs, businesses derive benefits from effective first aid cover. Evidence suggests that first aid trained staff have an increase in confidence and motivation within the workplace. Encouraging staff to learn life saving skills shows your commitment to the employee and also to the wellbeing of the workforce. The confidence and motivation demonstrated by trained staff is invaluable both in and out of the workplace.
What is an Appointed Person?
The Health and Safety Executive says:
"An appointed person is someone you choose to:
a) take charge when someone is injured or falls ill, including calling an ambulance
if required;
b) look after the first-aid equipment, e.g. restocking the first-aid box.
Appointed persons should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been
trained, though short emergency first-aid training courses are available (such as this one - our note). Remember that an appointed person should be available at all times people are at work on site - this may mean appointing more than one."
What is a First Aider?
A first aider is someone who has undergone a training course in administering first
aid at work and holds a current HSE first aid at work certificate. Lists of first-aid
training organisations in your area are available from HSE. You may decide, following
your first-aid assessment, that you need one or more first aiders. A first aider can
undertake the duties of an appointed person.
Note: This course is suitable training for the Appointed Person. It does not qualify the employee to be a HSE approved first aider, for which an approved three or four-day course is required.
